Finding U.S. Government Grants and Contracts

It's a lot easier these days to search for and identify federal government grant and contracting opportunities. There are web sites and services that can help you do this:


  • Grants.gov . You can go to this site and search for government grants by keyword, or you can browse them by category or agency. If you find one you're interested in and qualified for, you may be able to obtain an application package right at the site. There's also a lot of other information here about grants, including types of grants, frequently asked questions about grants, and links to various resources. This is a good site to get started learning about government grants.

  • Federal Business Opportunities (fedbizopps). This is a similar site for federal government contracts. At the top left are the words "find business opportunities." Click there, and you'll be taken to a comprehensive search page.

  • Government Agency Websites. Many agencies list their government grant and contract opportunities on their websites; however, some of them may refer you to the grants.gov and fedbizopps sites mentioned above. On my own site, I have links to grant pages of many government agencies and departments, as well as agency/department contract pages.

  • Commercial and Free Services. There are various free and paid services where you can sign up to receive e-mail notifications of grant and contract opportunities in your particular area(s) of interest. There are too many such services to list here, but you can find them via web searches. An example of one such commercial service is Bidnet (for contracts). You can sign up to receive e-mail notification of federal grant opportunities for free on this page of the grants.gov site.
