FINDING FREE GRANT MONEY - PAGE 3

OK, John and Janet have found one program that they are eligible for. Are there others? They need to do some more research.

If the're able to spend a little money -- less than $10 -- they can search for Grants for Individuals. This is a comprehensive online database of funding organizations that is operated by the Foundation Center, the nation's leading authority on foundations. This is no fly-by-night organization like some of the book sellers. It is very reputable, and the Center's products and services are used by many professional grant researchers. John and Janet may may not find something here for them, but it might be worth a look if they can spare the money.

But maybe they can't. While $10 may not seem like much, John and Janet have a family to feed and every dollar counts. So instead of spending $10 to research foundations from their home computer, they look up the Foundation Center's Cooperating Collections. These are free information centers in libraries and other facilities where people can get access to Foundation Center materials. John and Janet find that, in Illinois, there are six locations where they can search for free.

Finally, John and Janet can do a google search for "nonprofit housing programs" and/or "nonprofit downpayment assistance programs." Here are two of the many results that came from such a search: From these articles, John and Janet are able to find other potential programs that they might be eligible for.

Below you can search for nonprofit assistance programs in your area of need.

If, at another time, John and Janet find themselves in a crisis situation -- John loses his job, for example -- they may find themselves in need of financial or other assistance. Perhaps they will need food for their children, help in paying their utility bills, job training, shelter, etc. In such situations, they can look for help via the following: Now you know how to do your own searches for free money. By putting in some of your own time and effort, you will be able to find better information than what you'll find in the books.

But be realistic and don't get your hopes up. Remember what I told you earlier -- there is free money out there, but not for everyone.
